The Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission has renewed licences for several national corporations covered by the federal workers’ compensation scheme, Comcare.
At its meeting held in Sydney this week, the SRCC granted four-year licence renewals to Border Express Pty Ltd, Australian Postal Corporation, TNT Australia Pty Ltd and Transpacific Industries Pty Ltd.
The corporations are among 29 national companies that self-insure their workers’ compensation responsibilities under the Comcare scheme, which also provides federal workplace safety regulation and workers’ compensation for the Australian Public Service and the ACT Government.
Chairperson of the SRCC, Peter Henneken, said it was normal practice to review each application for licence renewal to ensure that employers could continue to meet the high standards set by the Commission for the work health and safety and rehabilitation of their employees.
"The focus of the Commission is to make sure that all employers are constantly improving the prevention of injury in the workplace, and working with their employees to support them and help them recover from injury when they are harmed."
"The Commission has a rigorous process of auditing and performance monitoring to test that employers continue to meet the Commission’s standards.”
In granting the licence renewal for Australia Post, the Commission reserved the right to reconsider its decision if necessary in light of the current Senate Committee inquiry about the employer’s return to work system, which is due to report on 24 June 2010.
Mr Henneken said the Commission also put in place arrangements to encourage a significant improvement in Transpacific Industries’ injury prevention performance.
