SRCC Safety Awards 2011 winners announced

Outstanding work health and safety initiatives were recognised at the annual Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC) Safety Awards, presented at a gala dinner held last night at Peninsula, in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne.

Now in their 11th year, the safety awards recognise and reward excellence in work health and safety, rehabilitation and return to work achieved by employers and employees within the Comcare scheme.

Organisations under the Comcare health and safety jurisdiction, including all Commonwealth public service agencies and private sector licensees, were eligible for the awards.

Over 400 guests attended the presentation last night where 21 finalists were acknowledged.
SRCC Chairperson, Peter Henneken AM said by becoming a finalist in the awards each individual and organisation demonstrated an impressive commitment to work health and safety.

“The entries across several award categories were inspiring and confirmed that organisations in the Comcare scheme are developing new and innovative ways to improve worker health and safety,” he said.

The winners in each of the categories are:

Category 1: Best Workplace Health and Wellbeing Program

  • Optus for Health and Safety—Our focus, your wellbeing

Category 2: Leadership Award for Injury or Disease Prevention and Management System

  • There was no award winner in this category, however a high commendation was awarded to the Department of Defence—Parachute Training School, Safe Delivery of Parachute Training for their entry.

Category 3: Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System

  • Department of Defence for OHSMS Improvement Strategy—16th Battalion

Category 4: Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue

  • Department of Defence–Army Aviation Systems Program Office for Passenger and Aircrew Survivability Design

Category 5: Best Individual Contribution to Health and Safety

   Sub-category 5a) An employee (e.g. Health and Safety Representative)
  • Leading Seaman Natalie Irvine, Royal Australian Navy, Department of Defence
   Sub-category 5b) An outstanding contribution by a person with responsibility for OHS as part of their duties
  • Lieutenant Commander Andrew Rohrsheim, Royal Australian Navy, Department of Defence

Category 6: Rehabilitation and Return to Work Award

   Sub-category 6a) An organisation that has demonstrated excellence and innovation in rehabilitation and return to work

  • Department of Defence for The Royal Australian Navy Diving School and Submarine Underwater Medicine Unit

   Sub-category 6b) An outstanding contribution by an individual in rehabilitation and return to work

  • Julie Sharples, Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
